Presentation Outline:
You may have heard of the field of patent translation and be interested in giving it a try, but how do you get from that stage to actually doing it? Up until now this has been a question of enrolling at a school in the unlikely event that you are fortunate enough to live near an establishment offering a suitable course, or burying your head in books and going through a long and painful learning process until you feel confident enough to try some trials. horsefrog has been carefully designed with the aim of taking the pain out of this process. It is a meticulously assembled system for studying patent translation in a methodical, systematic and interactive manner. Rather than passively reading a book, the student is given information a little at a time. This information is then carefully reinforced through questions and exercises. The degree of difficulty of the tasks involved then gradually increases as the course progress so that by the end of the course the student will be able to attempt to translate a sample patent reference with confidence. All tasks take place online, and students are even given short translations to submit in their "journals", with these translations then being reviewed by a course tutor as the course progresses. There is also a voluntary quiz at the end of the course, so you can see how well you have performed. Visitors and participants alike are also encouraged to make use of the freely provided resources, such as the patent glossary (containing many sample sentences), the forums, and the live chat room.Speaker Introduction:
After graduating with a degree in Physics, James
Phillips embarked upon a career as an electronic engineer in the UK, specializing
in Audio engineering. He came to Japan in 1989 and
worked for a Japanese professional audio company, before entering the field of
patent translation in 1992. James worked for several years as
a freelance translator and also spent 8 years as a director of a
Tokyo-based patent translation company, before forming horsefrog in the summer of
2005.
