Outline:
Recent studies in Europe and the U.S. indicate that "Teleworkers" are more susceptible to mental health problems than office workers, due to the stress and isolation that results from working alone – a working environment that is all too familiar to translators. At the JAT Meeting on March 26, Dan Castellano will examine some of the stress factors affecting translators – especially freelancers and those operating small businesses out of their homes – and will invite discussion from participants regarding ways of resolving some of these issues. We hope that this meeting will be of value to those currently considering the shift from "company employee" to "freelancer," and also to those translators already dealing with the stressful aspects of working independently.
Speaker:
Dan Castellano completed his undergraduate degree in psychology and philosophy in Canada, and worked in the mental health field for several years before coming to Japan in 1991. During his 14 years in Tokyo, he has worked as an in-house translator at a large trading company, and as an in-house translator and translation manager at two translation companies. Two years ago, after a short stint as a freelancer, he established "Blue-J," a small translation/transcription business that he currently operates out of his home with his wife, who acts as coordinator and accounting manager.
