Description:
Ranald MacDonald-- of no relation to the mascot of a certain hamburger chain-- is a little-known figure in history who accomplished something quite extraordinary. In 1848, at the age of twenty-four, he entered Japan of his own volition and spent nearly ten months in the country.
At the JAT meeting on Saturday, January 29th, Fred Schodt will discuss his latest book, Native American in the Land of the Shogun: Ranald MacDonald and the Opening of Japan (Stone Bridge Press, 2003). Using slides, Fred will explain how this young half-Scot, half-Chinook could have come up with the idea of going to Japan in 1848, and also explore some of the linguistic issues that he confronted on his adventure."
