Publishing a Specialized Industry Newsletter: A Long-term Investment

With so much "free" information on the Web, selling a newsletter is not directly profitable. The effort, however, represents a specialization tactic that can lead to fruitful business dealings in the appropriate niche. Reames will describe the value proposed in the newsletter, how the work relates to translation, the practical aspects of completing an issue, the associated website, and generating tangential business.
About the Speaker:
Seth A. Reames has been a professional E > J and J > E translator for 16 years,
and currently resides in Tokyo. Leveraging his experience working at
DIRECTV Japan, Reames publishes SAT-NET-CABLE Japan, an English newsletter
on the satellite, cable, and broadband internet industry in Japan.
To Copy or Not To Copy: The J-E Translator in a Japanese Advertising
Conglomerate

It has probably not escaped your notice that advertising is huge business in Japan—a market second only to the U.S. in terms of money laid down. But what is advertising, and is the way it is practiced in Japan the same as the way it is practiced in English-speaking countries? This presentation will look at advertising basics and where the J-E translator fits in based on the speaker's six years in the International Division of Hakuhodo Inc., Japan's second largest agency.
About the Speaker:
Wendy Chen has been resident J-E translator, English advisor and occasional
dummy-spitter in local government and corporate Japan for nine years. Having
lived a third of her life each in Scotland, Australia and Japan, she now
considers Yokohama home. In addition to translation duties she afterschools
her son in English and helps run the family ethnic restaurant in Kannai,
Yokohama.
