Two Years Before the Steering Column:
A Tale of Interpreting In-House in the Automotive Industry

Steve will describe his experiences interpreting in the automotive industry. The content of this presentation will include general background information about the automotive industry, look at the process through which automobiles are designed and the linguistic issues involved in translating and interpreting in-house in this field. He will also talk about what it is like to be a non-Japanese employed in a Japanese company, and some of the pitfalls and pratfalls of cross-cultural corporate communications.

About the Speaker:

Steve Venti has in the past been a member of the IJET-2000 operating committee and also of the JAT board of directors, in which he served as Webmaster during some of<www.jat.org>'s darkest hours. He is also a regular contributor to the JAT-List and Honyaku mailing lists as well as moderator of the JAT-Interpreting special interest group. A long time resident of Suzuka in Mie Prefecture, he first taught English, later did freelance translation and interpretation, and, in his younger years, often bemused the local population with outlandish acts of adulteration. At present, he is the sole proprietor of 有限会社 弁亭翻訳工房, a newly formed company, limited in both liability and expertise.
