Here is an update on the Board's activities last month, together with reports from our membership secretary and committee chairs.
Topics discussed by the directors at the meeting and in their ongoing exchange of e-mail included the following:
1. Use of JAT logo etc. by corporations
JAT should have an explicit "acceptable use" policy for the medallions it invites members to use. This should be announced on JAT-list and included on the page whence the medallions are downloaded. Richard Thieme will undertake to work with Ray Roman in drawing up such a policy.
2. Webcam coverage of JAT meetings
The directors are not presently undertaking to implement this suggestion (from member Seth Reames) but think it deserves further consideration.
3. Japanese version of by-laws
The Japanese translation of the JAT by-laws is approaching completion.
4. Website and Bulletin
The directors discussed various matters relating to the JAT website and the switch from an e-mail to a website (HTML) Bulletin. Please refer to the reports below from the Publications and Website Committees for some further details.
5. Client education
One planned addition to the website is a section with information for clients, i.e., users of translation. The Board is now considering a draft.
6. FIT membership status
The Board has decided to continue with JAT's present associate membership status in FIT, the International Federation of Translators, after considering the possibilities of upgrading to full membership and of dropping out of the federation.
7. Magazine article about JAT
As I reported last month, on August 10 Vice-President Kathy Taji and I were interviewed by Ms. 八代 登志江 (Toshie Yashiro), 編集長 of 『通訳・翻訳ジャーナル』. Ms. Yashiro also attended the JAT monthly meeting on August 21. She has written up a brief article about JAT, which has appeared in the November issue, and which is reprinted elsewhere in this Bulletin (see "JAT in the Media").

A formal proposal with all the required parameters has been received from none of the interested groups yet, however, and the deliberations of the committee will need to wait until more details are known. Naturally,the committee would welcome additional proposals.
Design and technical changes
The Web Site Director (WSD) reviewed the following files (approximately 70% of the pages directly linked to the main index page or one level from the index page) for design and technical uniformity,specifically in terms of character encoding (ensuring "shift_jis" was the coding):
index.html (parts rewritten and added to by Jeremy)
aboutjatj.html
aboutjat.html
nextmeeting.html (updated by Leslie)
pastmeetings1998.html (updated by Leslie)
pastmeetings1999.html (updated by Leslie)
recentnews.html (updated by Leslie)
joining.html
members only portion (and direct links to one level)
open directory (prior to Jeremy uploading the new one)
The following files are left to be done this month:
translation topics (which may be done by Bill Lise)
IJET portion of the site (Friedemann's pages)
Constitution (both English and Japanese)
board.html
other resources
honyaku
all directors' meeting minutes and archived Bulletins
We will continue to explore new design initiatives for the site, but perhaps later in October or November after the members' survey (our priority this month along with finishing the above refreshes)
In other design changes, Bill Lise has graciously offered to revamp the Translation Topics sections and indicates that he plans to use style sheets to do same. The question of maintenance for the TT section has been successfully resolved. We are looking forward to new content and a new design for this section in the coming months.
Content changes
There were no major content changes to the site during September, however, the WSD suggested to Jeremy and the Board that a flexible perpetual planning schedule be drawn up so that the Web Site Committee can coordinate its time and technical knowledge over the coming months to handle the following content additions:
* Members' Survey
* Bulletin refresh
* "Client Education" section
* "JAT Bookshelf"
* Bulletin Board feature (Ray Roman)
The site management function has evolved into the following format:
Friedemann: IJET portion of the site
Bill: TT section
Emily: Bulletin
Leslie: refreshes, overall site design, most pages
directly
accessible from the main index page
George: Bookshelf project
Jeremy: site design, membership directories, board pages
Our plans for October are:
* finalizing, coding, and executing the Members' Survey(could
take all of October with our available resources)
* working on new overall design for the site (style
sheets)
