Patent Translation: 特許翻訳
On October 16th Bill Lise will present a two-part talk about
patent translation, directed at translators working in
Japanese-to-English patent translator for filing in the US.
The meeting will be held from 2:30-4:30 p.m. at the Shiba
Seinen Kaikan, 2-1-20 Shiba Minato-ku Tokyo.
The first part of the talk will attempt to present a view of J-E patent translation as it is actually done in the J-E patent translation market in Japan, including the issue of the limits of the translator's mandate to provide a product that goes beyond translation in the strictest sense of the word. The second part of meeting will be in the form of a short workshop, in which some patent claims are translated. Participants are asked to do a homework assignment before the meeting. This assignment is available at Bill's website.
Bill Lise was an electrical engineer in his former life, and has does mostly patent translation these days, interrupted at times by deposition interpreting for civil litigation
