JAT Bulletin 174, September 1999
Jeremy Whipple
The Board held face-to-face meetings in Tokyo on June 19 and
July 17. Vice President Kathy Taji presided over both.
(President Jeremy Whipple was in the United States from June
14 through July 19.) Directors unable to attend the meetings
participated in online ICQ chat sessions on June 20 and July
18. In addition to these meetings, the directors continued to
participate in an ongoing exchange of email through the Board
mailing list.
Some of the topics discussed by the Board:
1. Advertising on the JAT Website
This idea was raised, discussed, and rejected.
2. Chapters, local activity committees
The idea of organizing activities outside the Kanto area was
the subject of considerable discussion. The Constitution and
By-laws allow the
establishment of local chapters at the initiative of JAT
members, but do not provide much if any incentive. As an
alternative approach the Board
considered the idea of setting up local committees to
organize events. Steve Venti came forward with a proposal for
a Kansai Activities Committee, which the Board accepted,
appointing him to chair the new committee. JAT will in
principle pay for the cost of renting rooms for the meetings
organized by the Kansai Activities Committee, just as it pays
for the meeting room in Tokyo. (JAT does not pay honoraria to
speakers at the Tokyo meetings, nor will it do so for the
Kansai meetings.)
3. Client education
The Board discussed the idea of collecting "client
education" materials with the eventual intent of putting such
information on the web site, preparing something for the
Bulletin, addressing the situation as a theme for a JAT
meeting, or a combination thereof. Judy Wakabayashi is now
putting together a proposal.
4. Honyaku
The surprise news from Honyaku mailing list administrator
Dan Kanagy that he had been notified of a big retroactive
rate hike from L-Soft, the home of the list, prompted a
flurry of discussion among the directors and with Dan and his
deputy, Tom Gally, concerning the possibility of some form of
JAT sponsorship to keep the list going. In the end, Honyaku
was moved to ONElist, a free service, but meanwhile Jeremy
Whipple and Kathy Taji have set up a meeting with Dan and Tom
for a general exchange of thoughts about the relationship
between JAT and Honyaku institutions.
5. FIT
The issue of whether to change JAT's membership status
within the
international translation federation FIT has been pending
since last year.
Late in July your new president received a boxful of
FIT-related materials from his predecessor, which may help
the Board settle this matter. JAT will not be represented at
the the FIT Conference in Mons August 6-10.
6. 通訳翻訳ジャーナル
Through the introduction of Mayumi Nishioka, Whipple and
Taji are to be
interviewed by Ms. Toshie Yashiro, editor-in-chief of the
monthly 通訳翻訳ジャーナル (Tsuuyaku Hon'yaku Jaanaru), on
August 10.

The Web Site Committee has continued maintaining the
JAT Web Site throughout this month and is currently in
the midst of the following initiatives:
* recruiting new people for the Web Site Committee to
assist
in idea generation, content production, and basic HTML
coding.
* keeping the current site updated (thanks to Emily
Shibata-
Sato for consistently uploading the Bulletins and the
Director
Meeting Minutes)
* being on the lookout for new content for the web site
that
provides information and value for JAT members both in
Japan and overseas
* preparing the 1999 JAT Members Survey (Leslie Tkach)
which will be online this month
* looking into web site management software to
streamline
the production of the site
* planning Summer 1999 site refreshes
We hope that all JAT members take the opportunity to
look
at the site. Any comments/suggestions are most
welcome.
-July-
The JAT Web Site Committee continues to work on revamping
the
JAT Web Site. Stephen Robinson of the U.K. has prepared two
different style sheets (dependent upon browser) for our site,
and we
are continuing to test them out.
Leslie Tkach, Web Site Director, and Emily Shibata-Sato have
been
trying out Dreamweaver 2.0 as a possible HTML editor for
updating
the JAT site. Leslie will be preparing a recommendation for
the
JAT Board to purchase a full, non-trial version of
Dreamweaver 2.0
(approximately \35,000) for use on the JAT site.
Leslie has also done some experimentation with the Bulletin
portion
of the site, which has been carried on by Emily
Shibata-Sato. Emily
will be looking into outsourcing the overall design of the
Bulletin
portion of the site, and dependent upon how she fares, other
sections
of the JAT site may also be considered for
outsourcing.
Friedemann Horn continues to work on improved features for
the
IJET-2000 site, and we will be having further discussions on
how
to link the two sites. Leslie will be updating the resources
page of
the site with links to Tom Gally's home page and Computing
Japan
magazine (both of whom will kindly provide reciprocal links
to the
JAT web site).
George Tokikuni and Leslie have been discussing how to
arrange
the JAT Bookshelf on the site and will be earnestly working
on this
during August.
Thanks very much to all Committee members, and we hope
that
JAT members look at the site and sent your comments
to:
