JAT member Michinobu Yoshimi will speak to JAT members on 20 December about translation activities related to Japanese automakers' transfer projects and environmental pollution (that created by the automobile manufacturing process and that created by the widespread use of automobiles.
The meeting will be held at the Shiba Seinen Kaikan near Hamamatsucho Station. It will begin promptly at 14:30 and finish shortly after 16:30. All JAT members, friends, and guests are encouraged to attend. There is no charge.
The meeting will be followed by an informal gathering at a nearby restaurant, to which all participants (including and especially newcomers) are invited.
A map showing how to get to the meeting site is available at http://www.jat.org/nextmeeting.html, or email president@jat.org with your fax number.
The 15 November Board meeting was attended by Lise, Tokikuni, Whipple, and House. The results of that meeting and subsequent discussion among directors are as follows.
Membership
Jeremy Whipple presented a membership report, an updated version of which is
presented elsewhere in the Bulletin.
Treasury
Bob Oliver, who announced ahead of time his absence from our meeting, submitted
a report, which included the fact that seven people have already signed up for
IJET (including, of course, paying their attendance fee). Oliver reported also
that he has paid the Shiba Seinen Kaikan 250,000 yen for usage of their meeting
room for the next year's rent.
JAT Meetings
Oliver reported that Mr. Yoshimi will indeed be our speaker in December. A
meeting notice can be found elsewhere in this issue.
IJET-9 Report
Tokikuni reported that arrangements are underway for IJET-9 but that not much
concrete could be reported, because of the timing of the IJET-9 meetings with
respect to our Board meeting.
IJET-10 Venue Proposals
The Board decided on Austin, Texas as the venue for IJET-10, to be held in
1999. This conference will be organized by a committee to be formed by JAT
Director Adam Rice.
Election
At the time of this writing, a call has been made for volunteers to serve on
the election committee. Pending responses to this call, there might be a notice
in another part of this issue with more details of the election. The most
important fact to know right now is that eligible members can put themselves up
for election by filing a statement of candidacy with the committee by 20
January. For more details about JAT elections, refer to your copy of the JAT
Constitution, and notices which will be posted by the election committee.
Here are some statistics for JAT membership as of the beginning of December.

Non-renewals
September 14
The number of non-renewals in September was disappointingly large, but it was out of a total of 26, meaning that 12 people did renew. Eight of those who didn't renew had no e-mail listing, meaning that JAT had basically lost touch with them. And some of the remaining six, who are online, may yet come through!
REMINDER TO JAPAN-BASED MEMBERS: Your postal code will have seven digits starting next February; you should update your directory listing accordingly. (And why not do it now? The post office is already accepting the new codes.) Send your new postal code to membership@jat.org.
