The Japanese Language Division of the American Translators Association kindly sent JAT a complimentary copy of its An Introduction to the Professions of Translation and Interpretation.
With a long section on the psychology of Japanese translators and then chapters on the translation of computer manuals, the business of patent translation, becoming a business and financial translator, doing legal translation, and more, the volume is must reading for any of your friends who are thinking of going into translation.
And for those of us already in the field, there are educational essays on the business aspects (e.g., finding work and maintaining customer relations) and on professional development, as well as a whole section on tolls for the translator/interpreter. And if you are doing or thinking of interpretation, there is also a long section on that with essays on simultaneous and consecutive, deposition interpretation, and more.
All of these essays are by qualified practitioners, many of them names you will recognize, and the book as a whole is well worth owning. This is an ambitious undertaking successfully completed, and JAT appreciates not only the free copy but, even more, all of the hard work that went into it.
